A Splitwise alternative for people who want the money, not the ledger
What is a good Splitwise alternative that actually gets people to pay me?
Splitwise is good software solving a slightly different problem than the one most people have.
It is a shared ledger. It is excellent when a group has ongoing, mutual, roughly balanced expenses over months — housemates on a lease, a couple, a long trip where everyone pays for something. Everyone logs what they spent, the balances net out, and you settle up occasionally.
That model assumes two things: that everyone in the group will keep logging, and that the balances are roughly mutual. Break either assumption and a ledger stops helping. If you are the person who always pays and everyone else is a debtor, the ledger is just a very tidy record of money you are not receiving.
Ledger versus collection
These are genuinely different tools and it is worth knowing which one you need.
A ledger answers "what is the state of things between us?" It needs buy-in from everyone, it needs to be maintained, and its output is a balance. Getting paid is a separate step you still have to initiate, usually by hand.
A collection tool answers "how do I get this specific $22 from this specific person today?" It needs buy-in from nobody but you, it is used once per event and then forgotten, and its output is a message with a payment link in it. There is no balance to maintain because the debt is meant to be closed within a day or two of being created.
Most people searching for a Splitwise alternative are not unhappy with Splitwise’s ledger. They are unhappy that having an accurate ledger did not produce any money.
Where each one wins
Honestly, and including the cases where TabDaddy is the wrong answer:
- Ongoing shared costs with people you live with, netting out over months — a ledger. Rent, utilities, a standing grocery budget. TabDaddy is not built for this.
- A group where everyone genuinely pays for things in turn — a ledger. Netting is the whole value and you should use it.
- One receipt, one night, one person who fronted it — a collection tool. There is nothing to net; there is a number to collect while it is still fresh.
- A group that will never install anything — a collection tool. TabDaddy only requires the person collecting to use it; everyone else receives an ordinary text with an ordinary link.
- Items with wildly different values on one bill — a collection tool that splits by item. Even splits are where ledgers quietly bake in unfairness.
- You are the only person in the friend group who ever fronts anything — a collection tool, and possibly a conversation.
What TabDaddy does differently
Nobody but you needs an account. Your friends receive a text with a link; they tap it and Venmo opens with the amount already filled in. There is no invitation to accept, no app to install, no group to join — which is what makes it work with the friend who has ignored three Splitwise invites.
It reads the receipt for you. You photograph the bill and every line item comes back itemised, so the split is by item with tax apportioned by subtotal, not divided evenly and not typed in by hand.
And it writes the ask. That is the part no ledger does: a short, funny, specific message naming what the person ordered, which you edit and send yourself. Balances do not collect money. Messages do.
The honest tradeoff: there is no running balance, no multi-currency, no long-term group. It is deliberately a one-receipt-at-a-time tool. If you want a ledger, use a ledger — and if the ledger has stopped turning into money, that is the gap this fills.
Questions people ask
What is the best Splitwise alternative?
It depends on whether you want a ledger or a collection. For ongoing mutual expenses that net out over months, a ledger app is the right shape and Splitwise does it well. If you are the person who keeps fronting money and needs a specific amount from a specific person today, you want a tool that reads the receipt, splits it by item and sends a payment link — that is what TabDaddy does.
Does Splitwise collect payments for you?
Splitwise records who owes what and can hand off to a payment provider, but the ledger itself does not make anyone pay — settling remains a separate action someone has to choose to take. That gap between an accurate balance and money actually arriving is the most common reason people go looking for an alternative.
Do my friends need to install TabDaddy?
No. Only the person collecting uses it. Everyone else receives a normal text message containing a normal https link; tapping it opens Venmo with the amount already filled in. Nobody has to make an account, accept an invitation or install anything.
Can TabDaddy track ongoing balances between roommates?
Not really, and it is not trying to. It keeps a history of what you sent and lets you re-send a nudge, but there is no running multi-person ledger and no netting. It is built to close one receipt quickly rather than to model a relationship over months — for the latter, a ledger app is genuinely the better tool.
