How do I split a bill on Venmo without sending five separate requests?
Venmo is where the money moves, but Venmo is not where the splitting happens. It has no idea what was on your receipt, so every split starts with you doing arithmetic somewhere else and ends with you typing amounts into five separate requests, each of which needs a note, and each of which can sit unopened for a week.
There is a much better version of this, and it turns on one detail most people never learn: Venmo payments can be opened from a link with the recipient, the amount and the note already filled in.
Requests versus pre-filled payment links
A Venmo request puts a line in someone’s activity feed and waits. It is easy to ignore, easy to lose under other notifications, and easy to mean to deal with later. Collection rates on requests are mediocre for a reason: the recipient has to notice it, open it, and decide, and each of those is a place to drop out.
A pre-filled payment link is different. It arrives inside the conversation you are already having — the group chat, the text thread — and tapping it opens Venmo directly on the payment screen with your handle, the exact amount and a note explaining what it is for. The friction between "I should pay that" and having paid it collapses to a single tap, which is the entire game.
The direction matters and is the single easiest thing to get wrong. The link you send has to open the debtor’s Venmo ready to pay you. Send them a charge link instead and it opens their app ready for them to bill somebody else — a broken loop that looks fine on your phone and does nothing useful on theirs.
Why you cannot just paste the link into a text
Venmo’s deep link uses a custom URL scheme rather than an https address, and iOS Messages will not turn a custom scheme into a tappable link. Paste one into a text and it renders as dead grey characters that nobody can tap and everybody assumes is spam.
The way around it is to send an ordinary https link that redirects into the scheme when opened.
